Severed Moon

Available$195

A ceramic plate cleaved in two rests against a deep crimson ground, its ivory surface tracing dense red arabesque and floral motifs in the manner of Ottoman transfer ware. The deliberate split runs through the heart of the design, separating yet mirroring each half. Frame and backing merge the fragment into a self-contained object, as intimate as a reliquary.

ON THIS WORK

There is a Japanese practice called kintsugi, in which broken ceramics are mended with gold, the fracture made into a feature rather than erased. This work asks a different question: what if the break is not repaired at all, but instead framed, honored, displayed as the central act? The plate carries a red-on-ivory arabesque pattern rooted in the long conversation between Ottoman court decoration and European transfer-printing traditions. Roses curl into scrolling vines; petals press against borders that seem to breathe. Then the plate is split along a vertical axis, each half laid open like a book, and the two pieces mounted onto a field of saturated crimson that echoes the motif's own pigment. The result is an object suspended between wholeness and rupture. Held inside a pale cream frame, the composition reads as a moon bisected, a circle interrupted, a story paused mid-sentence. The viewer supplies what the gap withholds.
