Crimson Bull

Available$190

A hand-built ceramic bull covered in deep crimson glaze, its surface broken by scattered flakes of gold that catch and hold the light. Two curving horns rise with quiet authority from the compact, rounded body. The gloss finish pools in the hollows, shifting from cherry-red to near-burgundy where the clay curves away from the sun.

ON THIS WORK

In many traditions the bull stands at the threshold between earth and sky, between labour and sacred power. Here, the figure is stripped to its most essential silhouette: broad neck lifted, horns arcing upward as if mid-bellow, four sturdy legs planted wide. Nothing is merely decorative. The crimson glaze was applied in several passes, building heat and depth in the same way a wood fire deepens over time. Gold leaf was pressed onto the raw glaze before the final firing, fusing into the surface so that it becomes part of the clay itself rather than an ornament laid on top. Where the gold thinned, it turned amber; where it pooled, it glows almost molten. Shirin works in a lineage of Persian and Anatolian craft traditions where animals carried symbolic weight in every household object, from water vessels to prayer tiles. This bull is small enough to hold in two hands, yet the tension in its upturned head makes it feel caught mid-gesture, full of unspent motion.
