Where Gold Blooms

Available$380

Two lotus blooms, hand-sculpted in pale clay, unfurl from an organic seed-form mounted against a matte black ground. Their petals and stamens are traced in fine gold luster, catching sunlight while the surrounding clay holds its quiet, unglazed warmth. The whole composition sits inside a wide gilded frame that completes the dialogue between raw earth and refined gold.

ON THIS WORK

In Persian and Anatolian traditions alike, the lotus rises from water and mud to meet light without carrying any trace of where it came from. This piece begins there, with raw, unglazed clay pressed and coaxed into two blooms that seem to have always been on the verge of opening. Gold luster is applied to the stamens and the tips of the petals by hand, one touch at a time. It is not decoration imposed on a surface but a reverence written into the form itself, the same impulse that guided the craftsmen of Iznik and Isfahan when they reached for gold to honor something they could not say plainly. Mounted on a deep black panel and enclosed in a gilded frame, the sculpture asks the room to slow down. The eye travels from the warm beige of the clay to the brightness of the gold and back again, settling finally on the space between the petals where neither one dominates.
