Two Birds in the Arch

A cream-white clay arch frames two small sculpted birds perched at its base, their wings traced in black and gold. Tiny red blossoms climb the arch on slender green stems, and a scatter of gold dots dusts the lower shelf. A turquoise bead and gold cord finish the piece for hanging.

ON THIS WORK

The arch is one of the oldest thresholds in human memory, a shape that separates inside from outside, shelter from sky. Here it becomes a garden portal, wound with flowering vines that suggest a Persian miniature's careful attention to the world in small scale. The two birds rest at the bottom of the arch the way a pair rests at the close of a long day, without ceremony, simply present. Their white glaze echoes the arch itself, as if they and the structure grew from the same earth. Gold dots on the lower shelf catch light the way dew does before it disappears. The turquoise bead at the cord's knot is the one cool note against all that warmth, a color carried across centuries of Anatolian and Persian ornament.
