Boteh in White

Available$260

A single boteh motif unfurls across a glazed white ceramic dish, its teardrop body filled with nested forms in cobalt blue, vermillion, burnt orange, forest green, and flecks of gold. The white field gives the motif room to breathe, so every brushstroke reads as a deliberate mark. Hand-painted in the tradition of Persian decorative arts, the piece is equally at home as a ring dish, a catch-all, or a wall object.

ON THIS WORK

The boteh is one of the oldest recurring symbols in Persian art, a form that has travelled across centuries and continents without losing its charge. Scholars have read it as a flame, a bent cypress, a teardrop, a leaf folded by wind. What it always carries is movement, the sense of a form caught mid-transformation. In this small dish, the motif is painted with the density of a miniature: tiny arcs, nested ovals, and scattered gold dots that slow the eye and reward a close look. Cobalt blue outlines hold the composition together while bursts of vermillion and orange press outward like seeds about to scatter. Shirin works at the scale of the intimate, objects that fit in a palm and ask to be held. The white glaze is deliberately spare, a quiet ground that makes the painted surface feel luminous rather than busy. The piece carries both the weight of a long tradition and the lightness of a single afternoon's focused hand.
