Still Face

Available$90

A terracotta clay relief mask with closed eyes and full lips, hand-built and painted in yellow, cyan, and red against a warm earth ground. Rhythmic strokes of raised clay radiate outward from the brow and cheeks, giving the face the quiet authority of an ancient emblem. Each surface detail is shaped by hand, so no two pieces carry exactly the same weight.

ON THIS WORK

A face with closed eyes holds more than one that stares. Still Face began as a single slab of terracotta, pressed and pulled until the forehead, nose, and lips found their own relief. The three dots, the brow-marks, the paired strokes beside the cheeks: each element arrived as notation, the way a musician marks a score before the sound. The palette is deliberate. Yellow for the nose bridge and eyelid arches recalls Anatolian sun tile; cyan cuts across the brow and cheeks the way turquoise runs through old Persian tilework; red seals the mouth and the crown dot, marking the points where inner heat surfaces. Together they press against the warm terracotta ground without overwhelming it. This mask does not demand a reaction. It sits with eyes closed, composed, as if listening to something on the far side of silence.
