Crimson Bloom on White

The Iznik workshops of the sixteenth century turned a single stem into a universe. Carnations, tulips, and invented blossoms climbed across tile and plate alike, each petal weighted with a precision that felt less like decoration and more like devotion. This piece draws from that same root. The stem rises off-center, giving the composition room to breathe. A full bloom commands the middle ground while two smaller buds open at the upper and lower reaches of the vine, their red and yellow petals reading almost like accents in a manuscript margin. White dots stipple the central flower's red lobes, a gesture that recalls the raised enamel of historic Iznik ware. The craquelure that veins the white ground is not damage but age and memory pressed into the glaze itself. It invites the eye to slow down, to follow each hairline the way one follows a sentence read twice.
