ON THIS WORK
In Persian custom, oranges carried to a guest's home mark the arrival of something joyful, something worth sharing before it passes. Here, two women hold that moment suspended: one already offering the bowl outward, the other pausing with a single fruit in her palm as if weighing the gift one last time.
The roses climbing over their shoulders are not decoration. They are the other half of the exchange, fragrant and fleeting against the permanence of gold embroidery and coin jewelry that the figures wear. Roses fade; gold remembers. Both belong to the same ritual of care.
Shirin painted the figures in gouache and watercolor on aged paper, the colors deepening in the folds of cloth where the brush returned again and again. The crimson veil moves like fabric that has been worn before, the green robe sits with the quiet authority of something sewn to last.
