Khatoon in Golden Light

Khatoon, the Persian word for a noble woman or lady of the court, carries centuries of quiet dignity within its syllables. This painting calls her forward not as a historical subject but as an enduring presence, wrapped in a shawl whose ochre and amber swirls recall the illuminated margins of old manuscripts. The gold disc behind her head hovers between sun and halo, neither fully celestial nor entirely earthly. It was painted in metallic gouache, built up in short, deliberate strokes until the surface caught the light the way beaten copper does. The two floating medallion ornaments, each a diamond of red and teal lacework, suggest jewelry removed and held aloft, or perhaps prayers taking visible form. Gouache on textured paper allows a particular kind of opacity, colours that sit on the surface with confidence rather than sinking in. Khatoon's shawl was built layer by layer, the arabesque drawn in a deeper amber over the flat saffron ground, so that the ornament reads as woven rather than merely painted.
