Between Two Minarets

Istanbul holds its oldest quarters the way water holds light: diffusely, without quite letting go. This watercolor begins at the edge of a narrow street, where the buildings lean close and the stone still holds the night's coolness. From that threshold, the eye moves toward the Blue Mosque, its central dome rising above a teal-roofed ablutions fountain and an archway worn smooth by centuries of passage. Two figures occupy the square below, their silhouettes small against the vastness of dressed stone and open sky. One walks alone toward the mosque; the other has paused, as if remembering something. The artist let the wash do the work in the sky, allowing grays and soft blues to pool and separate without forcing them. Ochre and amber in the surrounding buildings were built up slowly, layer by layer, until the walls seemed to hold warmth even in cool light. To look at this painting is to feel the specific weight of a city that has been a meeting point of worlds.
