The Chovgan Riders

Available$320

Two horsemen meet at full gallop across a golden landscape, their mallets crossed over a white ball suspended between them. Rendered in the tradition of Persian court miniature, every line carries the precision of a practiced hand: embroidered saddlecloths, turbaned riders, and rolling ochre hills flecked with tufts of sparse grass.

ON THIS WORK

Chovgan, the ancient Persian ancestor of polo, was played on royal fields long before it became a sport of empires. In this painting, the game is frozen at its most charged instant: the moment before contact, when horse and rider are one tensed form, the mallet already arcing downward. The warm amber ground of the composition, worked in gouache and mineral pigments on aged paper, recalls the gilded pages of Safavid manuscripts where the sky itself was made of gold and time moved differently. The turbaned figure in blue and the rider in ochre and red are rendered with the flat, assured line of the miniature tradition, each robe falling in deliberate folds, each horse's mane caught mid-flight. This piece belongs to a lineage of imagery in which sport is also ceremony, and movement is also stillness. To look at it is to hold two moments at once: the ancient game played under open skies, and the quiet of a framed panel that carries that game forward into the present.
